Weekly Update
Week of March 6, 2023
Word Work: Our class will learn the consonant + le, al, or el syllable pattern found in words like whittle, local, and nickel . Students should read their word lists, discuss the meaning of the words, and practice spelling words with similar syllable patterns. Spelling City is ready for students to access the practice list for the week.
March Is Reading Month: Hooray, it’s the 2nd week of Reading Month! This week students will continue to fill in how many pages they read each night. They will also enjoy a visit from author Ruth McNally Barshaw on Friday. Finally, we have decided to follow March Book Madness. Happening since 2015, two teachers from Ohio, choose a selection of books and then pair them in “games” where the winner is chosen by an online vote. This fun way of exposing readers to new books has grown from one small area of a state to something worldwide. If you would like to learn more about this, you can visit their website here.
Math Fact Pro: In an effort to increase math fact knowledge in our classroom, we are now using Math Fact Pro. I like it over other math fact programs as it only gives a few facts at a time before they can hear a joke or see their progress. In addition, they can play a game tailored to their abilities. Finally, there is an area where they can choose the operation they practice so that they can work on subtraction or addition. I have told them they may not do multiplication or division until their addition and subtraction charts are all green. To see this website, students can go to my teacher page on Clever (you can get there through the SJPS Symbaloo) and click on Math Fact Practice. Let me know if you have any questions.
Sarett Nature Center Field Trip: Our second graders will be traveling to Sarett on Friday, March 10th from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. to learn about maple sugaring. Parents are welcome to attend at a cost of $4.00 per person. Please plan on meeting your second grader at Sarett. It will be important to dress for the weather with boots since much of the time will be spent outdoors.
Music Performance: Our musical performance is just around the corner. Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 19th. This is the day our 2nd graders will perform their show. The performance will take place at the high school. All 3 buildings will be hosting their show that night so a time is yet to be determined. Please stay tuned for more information as I receive it.
